What is the American Airlines cancellation policy?

American Airlines offers a flexible cancellation policy depending on the type of ticket purchased. For refundable tickets, passengers can cancel anytime before departure and receive a full refund to the original payment method. Non-refundable tickets, however, do not qualify for a refund unless covered by specific exceptions, such as a 24-hour cancellation window.

Under the 24-hour cancellation policy, customers can cancel any ticket within 24 hours of booking, provided the flight was booked at least two days before departure. If outside this window, non-refundable tickets can be canceled, but the value is retained as a travel credit, valid for one year from the original ticket issuance date.

Basic Economy tickets are generally non-refundable and non-changeable unless canceled within 24 hours of purchase. Passengers with Elite Status or those holding premium tickets may have additional flexibility. If American Airlines cancels a flight, passengers are eligible for a full refund or rebooking at no extra cost.

For cancellations due to emergencies, such as illness or bereavement, American Airlines may provide exceptions on a case-by-case basis. Travelers are advised to check their fare conditions and consider travel insurance for added protection.
